What Makes A Good Marketer

A good marketer should be business and revenue-minded. He or she needs to understand the big picture, what the organization wants to achieve, the metrics that matter most to leadership, and how marketing influences those metrics.

For most organizations I work with, that metric that matters most is revenue.

How does marketing influence revenue? Factors include customer pains, product, competition, messaging, campaigns, sales, and internal processes. Good marketers need to look at all these factors and optimize for the most important ones.

Here are the skills needed. A good marketer needs to digest a lot of data, make recommendations, present plans, get buy-in, manage teams, and execute. In my career, I’ve launched 8 products and tracked the revenue for all the products.

Regarding execution, best marketers need to be analytical and creative. They have to understand customer pains, create the story of the brand and product, and see how this story drives KPIs.
